How a round robin works

In a round robin every player meets every other player exactly once. With an even number of players the schedule runs for one round fewer than the number of players, and everyone plays in every round. With an odd number it runs for as many rounds as there are players, and one person sits out each round — the bye rotates so nobody sits out twice. It is the fairest format there is, because the final standings do not depend on who happened to be drawn against whom. The trade-off is time: the number of matches grows quickly, so eight players is already 28 games.
